International Women's Day
To celebrate International Women's Day, Block Design's founder and lead designer Tara is sharing more about the story behind the business...
"At art college I studied on a designer maker course - this gave me a love and respect for materials and the making process. Block launched in 2000 at a show in Islington, London. It was such an exciting time to start a business, I can’t quite believe we are over 20 years old now!
I love working with my team every day in our studio in Cornwall. The people we attract always amaze me, I feel like we must be getting a lot right to have so many amazing people that have passed through our doors! There are currently ten of us - I love working in such a small, creative team. We all enjoy the footprint of our company and to have a large team would change the ethos and atmosphere of the company considerably. It is important to all of us that we have a good work/life balance.
Every time our products are chosen by the buyers at prestigious museums and galleries such as MoMa, Tate and Royal Academy I feel so much pride. They sit next to iconic designs in the museum shops which is a huge compliment.
The Reversible Vase is a very special piece to me as I love to have fresh flowers in the studio and my home. The borosilicate glass vase can be used one way for a full arrangement or turned around to create a single stem bud vase. I love the idea that a bouquet can be displayed an enjoyed right down to the last remaining stem!"
